Fellow education adventurers my site is at responsiblehealth.net

Thanks for all the great feedback and encouragment….

I am in the Everglades with my father far away from the world wide web.

Sunshine for everyone!

My free trial is expiring soon! I am slowly getting the dreamweaver work done it is taking forever. Each page I want to make reminds me of another I should make. Everything I share relates to another experience I have had. place I have been or a flavor I savor. Visually on each page I am keeping it simple and straightforward.

Here are a few musings about the role of food in education.

Learning about food helps you enjoy life. It is one of our most basic and complicated life process. Eating  is not separate it is intrinsically linked to doing. What we spend our time on defines us. Our experiences change how we experience the future. You can never go back. Each experience changes you.

Learning to love food is our first experience as we are fed as babies. What we are fed and how we are fed as childern effects how we will eat for the rest of our lives. How we see our parents eat, how we get our food every detail we absorb impacts our life.

Food is communal. The first time we eat we are with someone. It is natural for people to eat together. Eating celebrates living. The change of food on your plate marks the passing of time.

My favorite foods harken back to a dish my father made or that I ate somewhere. Either better or worse versions of this memory. I like some foods better than others.

Likes are developed young. Children should be encouraged but not forced to eat anything. There is no need for negatives about food.

Children should be allowed to enjoy foods they love and tempted to try new things.

Cooking and knowledge about nutrition is essential education.

Recipes and food knowledge helps children develop new understandings about themselves and the world around them. How does it do this???

Food teaches about different cultures. Have a multicultural day where everyone makes a type of food and explains about what it is, how it is produced, what it costs, shares where they bought their ingredients, learned how to rate it for nutrition, discuss flavor etc. Everyone has their own opinion. We agree on some things based on our heritage or experience.

Vote on favorite foods.

Make an after school program. Kids learn skills that are applicable to real life. Premise is Cooking and eating is communal. You eat as friends, as family, as community, as culture, as country. Following Recipes to make their favorite dishes teaches math, measuring, discussion and public speaking skills. Learning about food provides easy educational connections to learning about: Good eating habits, nutrition, health, respect for environment, money, farming, labor, immigration, exchange rates, stock markets, money saving, adventure and exploration…

After spennding a lot of time looking I found a lot of great sites. I now have an idea of what i want the site to look like. I want it to be simple and classic with good organization of material, interesting pages and pictures.

p1014250Now that I have my life under control!! I can enjoy it!

We have to eat why not make it a highlight of your day.

With minimal effort you can make a special meal at home that is fresher healthier and tons cheaper than a meal in a restaraunt. I have secret grocery stores no passport necessary. I have things to do, not tons of time but i want to enjoy life! Savor it! Make it beautiful.

Knowing someone’s favorite food and making it for them is beautiful.

Making that favorite dish in a healthy way with colorful fresh local or seasonal ingredients is golden.

I love cheese!

and all the good things that come with cheese…. :)

I would like this to be interactive so that people could contribute their own stories, favorites and recipes. Not sure if this is something that I know how to do. Possible formats include a comment box or emailed submissions…

Categories to include Restaurant Adventures, The Source,  Recipe Box….?

I would also like to have a section that is more kid friendly not sure what content i want to include

Nutrition, Presentation, Authenticity, Eating should be an Experience that makes you feel more alive!!!

2937549038_649f240bf2

So I have been racking my brain trying to find a digital media project worthy of my effort. In my undergraduate experience  I was disenchanted with the fairy tale of grading. As a teacher I believe the only projects worth doing are those that interest you and challenge you to find new meaning and understandings. I would like to put my hard work into a project I care about. I would like it to be useful to myself and to others not just restating something someone else has already said.

I ask myself… What do I uniquely know or care about that would make good impetus for a digital media project??? After considering a handful of options and thinking about how I would execute them I detest them all. They just don’t sound interesting. I can’t make my brain want to work on something I have no interest in.

Then I get hungry. I’m tring to decide where to go for the best chicken pad thai when it hits me! Something I know and love is the art of food, its preparation, nutrition and the general joy of eating. But, how does this relate to art??  I do consider it an art to create a seasonal, healthy meal that makes you glad to be alive. I also love to eat at little hole in the wall ethnic restaurants. Seeking them out and sampling their specialties is something that I enjoy very much. The question is how can this become a tool? Well I am often surprised by the limited amount of information I find on these places online. Few if any of my favorites are reviewed adequately. I don’t think you should have to spend more than 10 dollars on a fantastic meal. I think you just have to know where to go and what to get. Am I on to something??

I would like to create a website that has a balance of recipes using good nutrition sense, color and texture to create beautiful balanced meals. I would also to have tips on where to find specialty food ingredients on the cheap. I am disgusted by paying over 20 dollars for local Rockfish aka Striped Bass from Whole Foods when I know a little asian market where they are half the price and even fresher and tastier.

I also would like to have a section for kids with some easy healthy recipies that kids can make. I think learning about food and cooking when you are young is something that adds so much to a persons enjoyment of living for the rest of life. I also think kids who start thinking about food and exploring new foods when they are young think about eating differently for the rest of their lives.

I have looked at healthy eating and wellness sites for kids. Less than amusing. They seemed limited in recipes and talk down to kids rather than inspire them to try new things. While I am not sure what skills I would need to do better  with this on my own site, I think it would be worth pursuing.

So my proposal is to create a website with content about the ART OF FOOD! Somebody say YES! Does this sound like a viable idea? It is something I care about and be useful and that would teach something I am passionate about…

                                          THE JOY OF EATING!

I am a sculpture artist. I like how 3D objects resonate with us. I appreciate the value of each object based on its aesthetic, its function and its previous usage. When creating these pieces. i struggled because I prefer to manipulate things with my hands. that is how I feel connected to the piece. I like to touch and move and look and then move again. this process driven element allows me to tweak each object, each image to create significance. I missed the hands on manipulation. During the creating process I was very aware that i had the power to undo. I like making art that makes you take risks.

The best part of making these pieces is that I can use material from many different sources. In these images I use work that is mine and some that isn’t. The imagery is what I am focused upon. Layers compound more than one image in a square space. I started with one image and tried to find out why it was significant to me. I thought about what the image lent itself to and what meaning I wanted to convey. I used different filters to highlight the memorable parts and block the less than interesting parts. Composition and visibility I manipulated to their best effect. Making many images into one. This would not be possible in the same way if I was working with a traditional 3-D media.

The finished pieces represent compound ideas. They are not what they originally were but something more something altered by the layers added in time, something tweaked by the unique way that i view the world. My fascination with Religion, my belief in the necessity of Focus and Vision for the future echo in these pieces. It is difficult to take any one moment in life for the true value, the end all be all of significance. it is only by many events, repeated exposures and experiences that we can clearly see our path an appreciate the value of our tribulations.

Where is the hands on…? I’m not looking for fingerpaint, but something that is at least engaging please… I am getting and annoyed… Is there anything here that can really connect to stuff i already do or to help me enhance things i want to teach? Is my method so hands on that the idea of using a computer program for the backbone of artmaking in the classroom seems flawed. What are other educators using open source for?? Survey says…

Why am I still not impressed? Nothing seems to directly relate to my interests yet. the search goes on…

Wow! I had no idea this existed! Free programs for anyone! Can I really use these? Are there no tricky computer programming skills necessary to successfully download and use free software from the Internet? It’s not going to crash my computer or infect it with a nasty virus? What kinds of programs are there available? Are they as easy to use as the brand name software is? Are they as reliable?

Reporting: A Response to Internet Safari Hunt #1 this article on open source software and education.

https://edu-gelc.dev.java.net/nonav/educators.html  Alice educator tools, about a partnership between Sims and computer science educators allowing an engaging tool for beginning computer programmers in middle and high school. Then back to main link that has a source for java technology collaboration. Click link: View projects….Hmm maybe I could join one…I wonder if there is anything there that would help me? Hmm. The first four examples all sound like words related to computer programming…not really what I’m after, the next ohhh….maybe…just maybe…creative play for constructionist learning   Ok! That sounds good!

Sodaplay a “combination of interactivity and creativity supports a pedagogy in which a community of learners construct knowledge through exploration and experimentation” Yes! That sounds great! Sustain in microcosm the underlying method by which both scientific method and artistic practice construct knowledge.” Yes! Sodaplay seeks to promulgate the benefits of this approach within schools and support its further development through community participation and innovation. I like that too…. But how? “Sodaconstructor is a toolkit for creating and manipulating spring and mass models. I like models, but models of what? Ok models for software developers. Cool. but not really what I’m after.

I appreciate all the information and choices but half the time I wind up exploring 3 dead ends before my path meanders into a clearing in the internet wilderness.

Safari hunt link from article #2: Picture History cool. Maybe this would even? be worth paying for… But then is something considered open source if you pay for it? I like how well it relates history to the holidays.. http://www.picturehistory.com/product/id/7552.

Ok there is no price for educators??? I was expecting maybe 5$ but this is not a site geared for those on a budget. Corporate card please???

Money. I want computer software for free!!! What is out there for me??? Ok I’m looking for something art applicable. The thing I don’t ike about computers in the art class room is that they are not hands on. They feel  like a detachment from a visceral experience. My body suspends and my brain take sover and type type type. Click on a link, read, read. Where is the emotion where is the love?

Well, Johns Hopkins uses it to promote equal and open access to information and knowledge about the obstacles to the public’s health and their potential solutions  http://ocw.jhsph.edu/ cool… you can go to college without the degree or the money. Would people try harder, learn more if it was free or does the paying somehow bind a student to the experience of learning such that they get more out of the experience? Why do we value things that cost money more than those that are free? Maybe it is the knowledge that once you graduate with a degree it will increase your potential to earn that makes someone adhere to learning better??

College should be a free experience. A learning experience that equips you for the specialized skills you need to be a citizen and enter the workforce. College should promote individuality and encourage group and individual excellence and sustain the common good.

And lest we forget with a degree you can earn lots of money too…  I understand that we are all doing the best we can for ourselves but it would seem that by taking care of each other and of then world we live in we can create a network of caring support that would buoy everyone’s spirits and encourage us all to reach for success.

After experimenting In class and at home I have made some exploratory images using Photoshop. I am still struggling with a way to use Illustrator that improve my capabilities. The truth is I like Photoshop styled images. i do not like more graphically design styled images. Ilustrator is great for certain types of things, It just doesn’t seem to enhance anything I want to create. What could the problem be?? It is an expensive program, it must be very handy for something but what?? Maybe for layout oriented projects for magazines??? I want to find some tutorials online maybe they will put my pursuits in a positive direction….I want to post my experimental Photoshop and Illustrator pictures here but my blog host has a limit on how much I can upload. Grrrrr. There has to be a better way…. Listening to Kids With Guns 3:46 Gorillaz, Demon Days. Push it! Push it! Its real!!

Finally resolved to shrink the pictures into wee little files….Lets see if it works now…. Ta da!!!!

Please click on the individual images to see a larger version…

I found this project to be challenging. My process involved adding many different images to one piece, subtracting, resizing and tweaking as I went. Often I would use the button that looks like a camera in the History palate to capture an image of the current state of the project. After making changes and trying out filters and changing the alignment i would revert back to a much earlier state of the piece. I liked the freedom from fear that this neat history image capturing camera allowed. As an artist I do not know that I would like myself to get to used to this option as it felt too easy to undo a decision. I like when there is a history of the action left on the piece. For me it feels less genuine to so easily correct mistakes.

Technically I had hoped to create with illustrator. I found that the things i created i did not like. Perhaps it is my lack of familiarity with the tools and their unique capabilities that hindered my flow. I also found that i just do not like the type of images that I was capable of producing with Illustrator. After looking at other images produced with Illustrator i have decided that I like more photo realistically styled pieces and do not particularly like images with a graphic design style. Technically I feel that I failed because I should have been able to come up with something salvageable from my hours of tooling around with Illustrator.

Artistically I am pleased with the pieces i did create. The separate parts come from disparate sources but by smashing them into one frame they are changed. The one that by itself does not interest me juxtaposes with another in a way that I find rip[e for potential. It felt like I was collaging pieces into other pieces and then adding a lens by which it could all be seen together.

A problem I encountered was how to balance so many different images into one piece. I found that i would either have to little or too much in the frame. Finding just the right amount of fill for the space without jamming it up was hard for me. I found that I like lots of things going on at once. I like to have lots of things to look at and for my eye to bounce off of. When the image was simple I found I was disinterested. It was only by adding layers that I got the feel that i was after.

In the end I was pleased with the time I spent and with the result of my efforts. I still wish I had been able to produce something worth showing using Illustrator. i spent at least as much time creating with Illustrator as I did with Photoshop. Maybe I gave up too soon. Maybe I should have paid better attention to the demos so i would have more tricks up my sleeve. I walked the steps through and played around with drawing and altering but darn it, i just like Photoshop much better!!! Next time I would ask for some feedback and some direction halfway through the creative process perhaps my wonderful peers or my teacher could steer me in the right Illustrator direction.
