I am a sculpture artist. I like how 3D objects resonate with us. I appreciate the value of each object based on its aesthetic, its function and its previous usage. When creating these pieces. i struggled because I prefer to manipulate things with my hands. that is how I feel connected to the piece. I like to touch and move and look and then move again. this process driven element allows me to tweak each object, each image to create significance. I missed the hands on manipulation. During the creating process I was very aware that i had the power to undo. I like making art that makes you take risks.
The best part of making these pieces is that I can use material from many different sources. In these images I use work that is mine and some that isn’t. The imagery is what I am focused upon. Layers compound more than one image in a square space. I started with one image and tried to find out why it was significant to me. I thought about what the image lent itself to and what meaning I wanted to convey. I used different filters to highlight the memorable parts and block the less than interesting parts. Composition and visibility I manipulated to their best effect. Making many images into one. This would not be possible in the same way if I was working with a traditional 3-D media.
The finished pieces represent compound ideas. They are not what they originally were but something more something altered by the layers added in time, something tweaked by the unique way that i view the world. My fascination with Religion, my belief in the necessity of Focus and Vision for the future echo in these pieces. It is difficult to take any one moment in life for the true value, the end all be all of significance. it is only by many events, repeated exposures and experiences that we can clearly see our path an appreciate the value of our tribulations.

Hey
Just to clarify I didn’t intend to sound like I was discouraging the use of digital media (in or out of classrooms) because of my bad spelling habits. Apologies if thats what my post sounded like. I had another conversation with someone (I think this was in person not on the blog) and that person said that they actually improved their spelling since they use the computer so much because of spell check. Then I realized something, I very rarely use spell check. Am I too lazy? I don’t know what my problem is. I should defiantly start using it though.
But yes, I certainly agree that it is not a question of whether or not to use more digital media in the classroom, but more a question of how we use it.
